What is Pedorthics?
Pedorthics (ped-or'-thiks) is the design, manufacture, modification and fit of shoes & foot orthoses to alleviate foot problems caused by disease, overuse, or injury. A Certified Pedorthist (C.Ped.) uses foot orthoses, extra-depth shoes or custom-made shoes to help the customer be as mobile and comfortable as possible. Orthotics can be accommodative or functional depending on the needs of the individual. The health team consisiting of the doctor, the certified pedorthist & the patient should work together for your best results.
A Certified Pedorthist's studies include shoe construction & modification, foot orthotic materials & fabrication, and lower extremity anatomy & biomechanics; A Certified Pedorthist becomes certified through academic study at a University, years of personal and clinical experience, and by passing the exam given by the Board for Certification in Pedorthics (BCP).
